Philosophy of Awards:

The Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association believes that nurses who provide care to individuals with neuromuscular and skeletal disorders require a specific body of knowledge and skills to deliver the highest standard of care.

CONA believes that this knowledge is acquired, maintained and advanced through basic knowledge, continuing education , practice and research. In support of this philosophy, awards have been provided to be used for the continuing education of CONA members and for the recognition of members’ contributions to the orthopaedic nursing and patient community.

Eligibility of Awards:

  • All applicants must be an active CONA member (Registered Nurse).

  • All applications must be signed by a member of the local Chapter executive or by an immediate supervisor for members-at-large.

  • All applications are sent to the Chairperson of Continuing Education on the National Board and must be received by the deadline date. The Board reserves the right to extend deadlines and to encourage members to apply for awards.

  • All recipients are approved by the Board.

Description of Awards:

Conference Grant

This award is sponsored by CONA to assist members to attend the National Conference. The amount of $2,400 will be distributed among eight (8) CONA members.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be an active member of CONA or member at large.

  • Application must be complete and received by March 1.

Process:

  • Continuing Education Chair and Board review and select recipients based on criteria such as; number of years membership, previous or additional financial assistance, contributions to Association, etc.

  • If a member has been granted a Conference Grant and is unable to attend, the Grant will go to the next applicant.

  • Up to 2 grants may be given to an associate members.

  • 2 awards will be considered for applicants with less than a one (1) year membership in CONA.

 

Stryker Excellence in Orthopaedic Nursing Practice Award

This one-time award is sponsored by Stryker Canada to recognize and reward an individual's commitment and involvement in the specialty of Orthopaedic nursing. The award consists of a framed certificate, a complimentary registration to the National Conference and a monetary award of $500. The award is presented at the National Conference and the recipient is invited to the President's luncheon at the Conference.

Eligibility:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in Orthopaedic nursing, currently practicing in an Orthopaedic setting.

Nomination:

  • The candidate is nominated by colleagues.

  • At least 2 typed letters of recommendation must accompany the application form. These letters should address how the nurse's practice reflects excellence in the following areas: clinical decision making, technical expertise, communication, contribution to a positive work environment, development of the nursing profession, innovative techniques and/or research. Case scenarios or examples are beneficial to demonstrate the above attributes.

  • The letters and application must be complete and received by January 30.

Process:

  • Board reviews and selects recipient.

Canadian Orthopaedic Association Literary Award

This $250 award is sponsored by the Canadian Orthopaedic Association to recognize scholarly publication by CONA members. This monetary award is presented at the National Conference and the recipient is invited to the President's luncheon.

Eligibility:

  • Member is author or co-author of manuscript.

  • The manuscript has been published in the last year in the Orthoscope newsletter or a recognized journal.

  • The application and three copies of the manuscript are received by January 30..

Process:

  • Publication is judged on its contribution to Orthopaedic nursing and in terms of originality, comprehensiveness and timeliness by a committee including the Marketing and Communications and the Continuing Education Chairs.

DePuy Continuing Education Award

This $500 award is sponsored by DePuy Canada to foster development of continuing education in the field of Orthopaedic nursing. The award is to be used to attend the National Conference or other educational functions as recognized by the Board. The award is presented at the National Conference and the recipient is invited to the President's luncheon.

Eligibility:

  • Application and two supporting letters must reflect commitment of member to and active participation in continuing education for the Orthopaedic community.

  • Application and supporting letters must be complete and received by January 30.

Process:

  • Board reviews and selects recipients.

Dr. Robert B. Salter Award

This $500 award is sponsored by CONA to award applicants who are endeavouring to do research in the domain of orthopaedic nursing. The award was developed to honour the achievements of Dr. Robert B. Salter and to promote Orthopaedic nursing research. The monetary award and framed certificate are presented at the National Conference. The recipient is invited to the President's luncheon.

Eligibility:

  • Member is engaged in nursing practice in the orthopaedic field - including roles in education, administration, direct care, and research.

  • Member actively participates in all aspects of the research project-question formulation, proposal development, data gathering, outcome analysis, final write-up and submission for publication. (The applicant must not solely be involved in data collection).

  • A description of the research project will be submitted to the Continuing Education Chair. The research will be published in a recognized health care or professional journal when at term. Research done for academic credit will be considered.

  • A completed application, a letter outlining how above criteria are met and member's involvement in all aspects of the project, and four copies of the research article for consideration will be received by January 30.

Process:

  • A committee selected by the Chair Continuing Education reviews and evaluates submissions and a recommendation is made to the Board. Board reviews and selects recipient.

CONA Scholarships Award

These two awards are sponsored by CONA and consist of $1,500 and $1,000 in non-repayable monies. Previous recipients may re-apply for these awards. The monetary award is received by the recipient after July 31 of the current year and is formally acknowledged at the National Conference in the following year. The recipient is invited to the President's luncheon.

Eligibility:

  • Member for two years prior to application and has demonstrated commitment in the field of Orthopaedic nursing. The applicant demonstrates a high standard of clinical practice in Orthopaedic nursing.

  • The applicant demonstrates a minimum of B average in recently completed academic programs (within last 5 years).

  • The applicant submits; a resume outlining their experience in Orthopaedic nursing and contributions to CONA, Post-secondary academic transcripts outlining academic background and grades, a letter of acceptance or verification of full-time or part-time enrolment in a recognized program, and information about proposed course of study and relevance of the course to Orthopaedic nursing practice.

  • Two letters of recommendation, one from immediate supervisor and one from a nursing professional who has personal knowledge of academic and professional abilities of the applicant are also required by the deadline of May 15 of current year.

Process:

  • The Continuing Education Chair and the Board review submissions and recipients will be notified by July 31 of the current year.

  • Upon completion of the course of study the recipient shall submit a manuscript suitable for publication in the Orthoscope Newsletter

CONA Speakers Fund Award

These awards are sponsored by CONA through Hip Hip Hooray funds to support CONA members to share their expertise and knowledge. Three awards of up to $500 are available per fiscal year to cover the costs of registration, travel, or accommodation for a CONA member to present at a Conference or workshop.

Eligibility:

  • Member for two years prior to receipt of application.

  • Three copies of abstract or brief synopsis of presentation, application form, and estimate of costs to be incurred are sent to Continuing Education Chair prior to presentation.

  • Topic to be presented relates to the practice of Orthopaedic nursing.

  • Applicant to formally mention at presentation that CONA has supported their attendance to give the presentation.

  • Within two months of presentation a copy of official program (or evidence of presentation by member), registration, travel, and accommodation receipts and one copy of the presentation for publication in Orthoscope Newsletter is sent to the Chair Continuing Education.

Process:

  • Abstract or synopsis and estimate of costs are reviewed by Continuing Education Chair and Board.

  • Decision to be based on innovation, relevance to current practice, and value of presentation to Orthopaedic and/or nursing community.

  • Chair Continuing Education notifies member if qualifies for funding.

  • Member receives funds after receipts and one copy of presentation received for publication in Orthoscope Newsletter.
